Este cayo era la ubicación de una de las estaciones del ferrocarril de ultramar. Fue golpeada casi directamente por el huracán del Día del Trabajador de 1935, causando 423 muertes. Un monumento conmemorativo, que incluye las cenizas de más de 300 víctimas, existe hoy en el marcador 82 de la milla de Ultramar.
El jugador de béisbol del Salón de la Fama, Ted Williams, comenzó a visitar Islamorada en 1943 y durante los siguientes 45 años fue el residente más conocido de la isla con sus habilidades como pescador.

Islamorada was the location of one of the stations of the Overseas Railroad stations. It was hit almost directly by a hurricane of 1935, causing 423 deaths. A memorial, including the ashes of over 300 victims, exists today at marker 82 of the Ultramar mile.
Baseball Hall of Fame player Ted Williams, began visiting Islamorada in 1943 and for the next 45 years he was the best-known resident of the island with his skills as a fisherman.
The village was incorporated on November 4, 1997. Prior to this date, "Islamorada" referred to the evolving community on the island of Upper Matecumbe Key.
